Recent data shows a significant amount of forest land in Chandigarh has been diverted for non-forest purposes. This has sparked concerns about environmental impact and sustainability.

Background

Over the last decade, Chandigarh has seen 40 hectares of forest land being diverted for non-forest purposes, raising questions about the conservation of green spaces in the region.

Government Response

Union Minister Bhupender Yadav confirmed that a substantial portion of this land has been allocated for construction projects, including the expansion of PGIMER in Chandigarh.

Environmental Clearances

The projects received environmental clearances under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, and Environment Impact Assessment Notification, 2006, indicating adherence to legal protocols.

Forest Cover Expansion

Despite the diversions, Chandigarh has witnessed a 9% rise in forest cover over the past seven years, attributed to initiatives like the Greening Chandigarh Action Plan (GCAP) and community participation through tree plantations.
