Farmers Slam Authorities Over Lack of Amenities at Mandis
Farmers waiting to sell their produce criticize authorities for inadequate facilities at mandis, hindering lifting and procurement processes.
Farmers in India are facing hardship due to delays in procurement and lack of basic amenities at mandis. Harnek Singh from Jodhan village has been waiting to sell his produce for eight days, along with many others. The authorities are not buying paddy with moisture content over 18%, leaving farmers struggling. They criticize the lack of facilities like washrooms and drinking water at Dana Mandi on Gill Road and the grain market in Jodhan.
They urge the government for small shelters to protect them from the weather during long waiting periods. The delay in lifting has led to a space crunch at the grain markets, making it difficult for farmers to store their paddy safely. The congestion worsens as new arrivals find it hard to find space.
Efforts are being made to improve the situation, with temporary washrooms and basic facilities being provided. District mandi officer Gurmatpal Singh assured that lifting is being done properly. Despite the challenges, over 9,61,000 MT of paddy has been purchased, and 5,34,000 MT has been lifted till now.
