Concerns Over Unmarked Speed Breakers in Ludhiana - Road Safety Experts Issue Warnings
The Municipal Corporation in Ludhiana faces backlash for unmarked speed breakers that pose safety risks despite multiple notices issued by the court. Road safety experts warn about the dangers of such speed breakers.
Unmarked Speed Breakers in Ludhiana
The Municipal Corporation of Ludhiana has come under fire for the presence of unmarked and unpainted speed breakers, which are posing serious safety risks for commuters. Despite several notices issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the construction of these hazardous speed breakers continues in various areas such as Civil Lines, Dugri, Model Town, and Rakh Bagh Road near the Guru Nanak Stadium.
According to the norms set by the Indian Road Congress (IRC), standard speed breakers should be 0.1 meters high and 3.7 meters wide. Kamaljeet Singh Soi, a member of the National Road Safety Council, emphasizes that these speed bumps should be painted in black and white to enhance visibility for commuters. Additionally, there should be signboards and yellow stripes on either side of the bump to alert drivers.
Highlighting the non-compliance of safety measures, Shimlapuri resident Komalpreet Sohanpal expresses concerns about the risks posed by these unmarked speed breakers, particularly on the Dugri lane leading to Model Town. She points out that as winter approaches, these bumps become harder to spot, increasing the likelihood of accidents.
In April 2021, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had issued a notice to the administration directing them to remove speed breakers that violate IRC guidelines.
