Haiti Hospital Under Police Control After Armed Gangs' Attacks
Haiti's largest hospital, the General Hospital, located in Port au Prince, has been taken under police control after months of attacks by armed gangs. The escalating violence in Haiti has pushed the healthcare system to the brink of collapse, leading to a shortage of resources and serious illnesses among patients.
Haiti Hospital Under Police Control
Haiti's newly selected Prime Minister Garry Conille and Haiti's police chief visited the country's largest hospital on Tuesday after authorities said they took control of the medical institution over the weekend from armed gangs.
Police Take Control
Haitian police chief Normil Rameau announced that the police took control of the Hospital of the State University of Haiti, known as the General Hospital in Port au Prince, on Sunday night after months of escalating attacks from armed groups.
Rebuilding Efforts
The hospital, left ravaged by gangs, is set to be in full service by February 2025 according to Council member Louis G rald Gilles. Prime Minister Conille emphasized that the hospital serves the poor who need serious medical help.
Healthcare Crisis
The violence in Haiti has led to a surge in patients with serious illnesses and has worsened the already struggling healthcare system. Gangs looting and destroying medical institutions have pushed the system to the brink of collapse.
Besides attacks on healthcare facilities, gangs have also targeted police stations, airports, and prisons in Haiti, displacing nearly 580,000 people since March.
